Uncut Gems: Gemstone Cutting Workshop Visit

We recently had the immense privilege of visiting an incredible operation right in the heart of Nairobi, Kenya. We were on-site at what is currently the region's largest gemstone cutting facility.

The Challenge: Exporting Rough, Missing Out on Value

It's a well-known fact within the fine jewellery and precious stones sectors: East Africa is a treasure trove of truly stunning gemstones. From vibrant Tanzanite to striking Garnets and exquisite Sapphires, the volume of rough crystal mined here is staggering. Yet, historically, a huge portion of this mineral wealth is routinely exported as rough gemstones, only to be cut, polished, and sold as finished gems in other countries. This practice means the region misses out on significant added value, crucial skills development, and control over the gem’s journey.

The Solution: World-Class Gemstone Faceting in Nairobi

We were honoured to witness an operation with a clear, inspiring mission: to bring the skills of world-class gemstone cutting and gemstone faceting directly to East Africa.

Every single stone we observed being processed was cut to an exceptionally high standard. More than just cutting stones, this facility is actively training the local population, creating a new generation of skilled artisans who can transform rough crystals into magnificent, expertly cut precious stones.

Beyond Beauty: Responsible Sourcing and Local Impact

For us, this vision adds another crucial dimension to the beauty of the natural gemstones and the finished jewellery they become. We passionately believe that working with partners who have visions broader than the stones themselves elevates the entire process. This is the essence of responsible sourcing.

Keeping the gemstone journey in East Africa for longer is a win for everyone. It allows us to:

  • Keep Track of the Gem’s Story: Ensuring greater transparency and traceability from mine to market.

  • Bring New Skills to the Region: Investing in local talent and expertise.

  • Ensure the Region Benefits: Maximizing the economic return from its own mineral wealth.

We are thrilled to be returning to London with a collection of beautifully cut East African gemstones from this specific operation. They will be making an appearance soon!
